Holy Week

Settimana Santa di Cuglieri

The Holy week in Sardinia is a unique, exciting experience. Time-honored traditions of Spanish origin merge with very ancient local mystic and religious customs to give life to rites, processions and choral events of great expressive strength and suggestion. Special emphasis is on the Mystery processions, the touching rites of the Deposition from the Cross ("Su Scravamentu") and the meeting between the statues of Jesus and of the Madonna ("S'Incontru") along the streets of the villages. A role of utter importance is played by the Brotherhoods who curate the mysteries and parade in their suggestive customs, intoning religious songs in Latin and Sardinian, whose origin date back to the Middle Ages.
